Productivity & Human Resource management
As a country, Singapore has identified the increase of productivity as a key area of growth as it has been said that we are not competitive enough in terms of ensuring efficiency in work processes. Thus, the recent Budget announced greater initiatives to increase our productivity.

Many recommendations and suggestions have been put forth but the question is how you put them into practice effectively.

One of the ideas mooted is to increase automation, which will result in a reduction in the need for human labour. This is a very interesting point, especially because our company is in the business of recruiting human resources management.

Implications on the Workforce
There are three groups of workers in question here: the unskilled workers, the support level workers and the PMETs. In the long-term, Singapore should strike the right balance between the number of Singaporeans and foreigners. But the reality that still lingers is that Singaporeans are unwilling to take on the so-called unglamorous positions such as construction/factory workers, chamber maids, toilet cleaners, etc. It is understood that by increasing innovative processes and automation, there will be less reliance on this group of foreigners. Nonetheless, there is still an innate need for them thus it’s a very intricate balance that must be struck.

The next group is the support level office workers – secretaries, junior managers and technicians etc. Productivity here should be increased because these are the positions that Singaporeans can take on. The question here is how far automation can evolve to improve the productivity of this group. It will be very tough to implement, but it’s the right direction that we’re heading towards.

The final group is the specialists – the ones with the E-passes coming from technologically advanced countries, like research scientists in the biosciences or energy specialists researching on renewable energy. Attracting them to Singapore is imperative and it would certainly help position us more competitively on the world stage.

"Through these initiatives, we will be able to offer a faster response time and greater efficiency in presenting to our customers the right people they need."

Putting it into Practice within our Domain
Within our own company, we already have plans to invest heavily in upgrading our software systems such as our CRM and candidate database management systems and the measures announced in the Budget will help facilitate this. Through these initiatives, we will be able to offer a faster response time and greater efficiency in presenting to our customers the right people they need. This should increase the productivity of our organisation by at least 10% and we are certainly looking forward to its implementation.
